I?m Emily Liu, currently attending a technology management faculty-led field trip in Europe. In the first week, we explored Paris and the Alsace region. Soon, we will head to Germany and Austria for a Sound of Music tour and more company visits. My initial impression of France was everything I had imagined, but I also gained deeper insights into the local way of life. The architecture was stunning, and there was so much history to learn and see. However, on the less attractive side, the metro gets really crowded and the French are very direct in expressing annoyance towards foreigners. Other than that, I had the opportunity to travel around the city with my new friends, try new cuisine, stock up on pastries, and enjoy all the views and culture Paris has to offer.
During our visit to Schneider Electric, we received a tour and learned about their products and operations. It was fascinating to witness the inner workings of a well-established tech company and to discover the unique work culture and business practices of foreign companies. In the Alsace region, although we didn’t visit any companies, we had the chance to walk through town, visit a winery, and explore the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle. It was amazing to be able to experience the authentic side of Strasbourg and immerse myself in the local lifestyle. The rural atmosphere provided a contrast to Paris, and while the 20-minute walk to the metro was annoying, it was rewarding to have the freedom to visit town at any time and enjoy the natural surroundings.
The biggest difference I noticed about France and the US is the food and daily lifestyle. The food is absolutely delicious, and every meal always consists of bread and cheese. The simplest things, like orange juice, taste so different from what they have to offer back in Texas. Metros and trams are also the main form of transportation for civilians, whereas back at home we basically drive everywhere even when it is like a mile away. Although I eat pastries practically every day, the long walks help keep me fit and feeling healthy. So far, this trip has been an incredible journey, where I’ve had the opportunity to learn about the rich history and culture of each place we visit. I’m excited to see how Munich and Salzburg differ from both France and the United States!
