My final reflections on what I learned about conducting business and engaging with individuals in Panama includes the importance of their economy, being based on agriculture. Over almost half of the land is given to the agricultural sector, and I got to witness first hand when we went to Panama?s fish market on how heavily they rely on good fishing stocks. I also know now that Panama has a variety of duty, free zones that allow businesses to import and export products/services which also include low income tax rates. I have concluded that Panama is a country that provides so many opportunities for people that wish to do business either locally or internationally, which includes the Panama Canal. I have also learned how individuals in Panama engage with each other, as well as their manners, language, etiquette, etc. I have noticed that they tend to touch each other while talking and is respectful when making eye contact with the person you?re communicating with. They communicate with each other by speaking Spanish, but most individuals also are able to speak English or one of their indigenous languages like Guaymi or Kuna. I have also been able to notice that it is traditional to greet people by saying ?Buenas? as well as saying either ?Buenos Dias? or ?Buenas Tardes? can also be used. Whenever we would go to restaurants, I had noticed that it is not mandatory to tip in Panama but people tend to tip about 10% which is another way I engage with individuals in Panama. My time abroad has definitely changed my perspective on what Panama brings to international business as well as how their cultural background is so diverse, and how I can engage and communicate with them by educating myself on their practices. My initial impressions I feel like were completely off and I got to realize so many things by the end of my time abroad.
