Arriving in Panama City, I would anticipate being captivated by the city’s vibrant atmosphere and its rich cultural heritage. However, my initial impressions might have been somewhat subdued as we arrived in the middle of the night, and the airport was located approximately 30 minutes away from the beautiful city center. The cultural disparities between Panama and the United States are indeed striking. Panama’s cultural fabric is shaped by a captivating fusion of diverse influences resulting from its historical background. Indigenous traditions, Spanish heritage, Afro-Caribbean customs, and North American impacts have interwoven to create a tapestry of Panamanian culture. This vibrant blend is vividly apparent not only in the customs and traditions but also in the culinary landscape and the people encountered in Panama City. One aspect that highlights these cultural differences is the wide range of dining options available in Panama City. From savoring traditional Panamanian dishes to indulging in Chinese and Caribbean cuisine, the gastronomic scene reflects the multicultural nature of the country. This diversity in culinary experiences provides a glimpse into Panama’s cultural fusion and offers opportunities to explore and appreciate its varied influences. This also doesn’t include the traditional practices seen during one of my activities which included a trip to an indigenous village. One of the most memorable aspects of the village was exploring their cuisine. They expressed their cultural identity through food, preparing traditional dishes that incorporated locally sourced ingredients as well as hosting a variety of music and dances to showcase. Overall, my hope for this global experience would be to gain a comprehensive understanding of international business practices, develop cross-cultural communication and negotiation skills, and cultivate a global mindset. By immersing myself in Panama’s unique culture and business environment, I aim to broaden my perspective, challenge my assumptions, and grow both personally and professionally.
