From my one week abroad in Panama, I was able to witness how business was conducted. It was similar to what we learned in my international business class. It was evidently relationship oriented, and strictly hierarchal. Meaning it was a friendly workplace environment, yet you still had to follow your superiors’ orders with little room to provide your own input. Although in one of our company visits, they informed us that they were trying to move out of that structure so as to let employees be involved more and contribute to the growth of the company on a more personal note. You can tell that these companies really care about their employees? safety and success. One big piece of advice shared to us by our tour guide Juan in regard to conducting business anywhere is that information is key. We must carefully gather it and utilize it wisely. This is something that will stick with me in all of my future business endeavors.
As for engaging with individuals in Panama, non-business-related interactions were just as enthusiastic as business related interactions. Everyone I had the pleasure of meeting was very kind, nice, and great conversationalists. The people of Panama are full of life and energy. They always greet with a smile and are more than willing to help you if you ask. In conclusion, my time abroad has allowed me to grow my global mindset considerably. To see beyond what I know and place myself in the shoes of someone who leads a different life than me if only for just a few days has been life changing. I now see the bigger view of what before I only could ever just get a glimpse of. I will forever cherish this experience and what is has done for me.
