Before landing in Panama, I had preconceived notions and stereotypes that molded my impressions of the country. I only knew Panama as a country with a picturesque canal and a thriving tropical environment. However, the trip has shown me that Panama is more than just its iconic landmark?it houses a thriving hub for business activities. One of the things I took away from this trip is the value of human-to-human interactions when it comes to business. Personal relations and establishing trust are essential when conducting business within Central American countries. The locals value genuine connections, which means having long conversations and getting to know each other’s backgrounds and interests. The idea of emphasizing relationship building was a new concept to me but something crucial I will utilize in the future when conducting business.
Beyond the trip’s business aspects, I was allowed to immerse myself in the Panamanian culture. My interactions with the locals in various environments, from cafe settings to an indigenous village, enriched my understanding of the culture. I was amazed at the amount of warmth and hospitality displayed by the Panamanian people. They were excited to share their customs and traditions, making my trip more memorable.?My time in Panama has taught me that the country has a unique mix and diverse cultural makeup. I had the pleasure of witnessing various dances and celebrations that showcased the blend of different cultures. This multiculturalism trend permeates every aspect of Panamanian society, from food to music.
My stay in Panama, although short-lived, has broadened my views and destroyed any preconceived notions I had before. After engaging with the local community and navigating the business world, I learned to utilize active listening, embrace cultural diversity, and be flexible. Being exposed to such diversity and new perspectives has strengthened my collaboration skills and helped me view challenges and hardships holistically. Reflecting on my experiences in Panama has shown me that every initial impression I had was far from the whole truth. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to explore this wonderful, vibrant country. The lessons I learned in Panama about conducting business and cultural connections will undoubtedly affect my future endeavors. I truly enjoyed every second of my time in Panama and would do it all over in a heartbeat.
