From my study abroad experience in Panama, I have truly gained a global mindset. My time in Panama has enabled me to view business opportunities and challenges from a broader perspective. I have become more open to new ideas, adaptable to change, and comfortable being in an unfamiliar environment. This is something that is extremely important to have in business, especially when it is being conducted abroad. My perspective on being abroad definitely gave me a change in my mindset. Engaging with individuals in Panama allowed me to experience firsthand the power of cultural exchange. Interacting with people from different backgrounds and embracing their way of living has broadened my perspective. I was never afraid to be in diverse situations, but now, it is something I greatly appreciate. I was the odd one out and was in an unfamiliar setting, yet I was treated as a local, and treated with upmost respect. I would like to continue that cycle of positive energy and give it out to others in my day-to-day life. Initially, I approached conducting business in Panama with some knowledge of international practices. However, Panama’s unique business environment provided me with a wealth of new insights. My initial impressions were pretty accurate, however, I did not realize how welcoming the locals were, even though I do not speak Spanish. This was especially seen whenever we travelled on canoes to visit a local tribe. They embraced us with open arms, showing us their local dances and giving us fresh food, while also having a shop filled with handmade items. I also did not account for how much the local population affects business, which is something that seems like a no-brainer. Cultural understanding, respect for local customs, and building personal relationships are something highly emphasized. They are very important to be understood, because if someone does not have them accounted for, one will be unsuccessful in conducting business in Panama.
