I have learned that conducting business abroad is very different to conducting business within just one country. There are different cultural aspects that tie into conducting international business. One needs to research the customs and traditions of the other country in order to be respectful and mindful. For example, in Panam? people are very flexible about time and have a hierarchical business tree, which is important to know if conducting business there. I have also learned that engaging with individuals in the host country is very different than in the United States. Panamanians are very direct and know what they want. Adapting to this is important to fit in and be respectful. Additionally, my time abroad has allowed my perspective of the world to widen. The Panam? Canal plays such an important role in international business and being able to see how it is conducted was incredibly beneficial. My initial impression of Panam? became more accurate as time went on because I was able to be fully submerged in the culture in the indigenous village and local restaurants. I also thought the people were very nice and helpful in Panama, which held to be true. Every Uber driver we had was extremely kind and every guide we had was knowledgeable and seemed interested in our American culture and lives. Since I knew the language prior to coming to Panam?, I knew I would be able to connect with the country even further. I understood the jokes waiters would make and even references our guides would make. Overall, my time in Panam? abroad was very rewarding and I?m glad I was able to practice my Spanish and learn about international business in such a beautiful country with my classmates. I hope to return soon and further discover the canal and visit more local hubs.
