Studying abroad was the best decision I could have made and had such a profound impact on me and the way I see the world. I was able to experience so much of what Europe had to offer through culture, cuisine, and everyday life. Milan was the best home base as it was a beautiful city as well as a travel hub. Some of my favorite days were the ones where all I did was lay out at the park with a loaf of fresh baked bread and chocolate and later tried out a new aperitivo spot, jazz club, or stand up comedy hour. When spring was in full swing, the city came alive. Everything was green in the heart of downtown with flowers blooming and parks filled with people playing futbol. Live music performances were around every corner, and every weekend, there was a new flea market to try. I think I fulfilled my wish and lived everyday to its fullest.
I’m also glad I was able to explore Milan as well as other small Italian cities. Studying abroad was a mix of traveling to huge historic spots all over Europe and also immersing myself within Italian culture. I think I did a good job splitting time, and I’m thrilled with everywhere I was able to go and what I got to do in such a relatively short amount of time. I road tripped, backpacked, hiked, flew, trained, and Flixbussed all over the European continent. I remember being so worried at the beginning about not having enough time to do everything, but the four and a half months were perfect. I wouldn’t change anything except maybe bringing more Nyquil because I caught three bugs from all the traveling.
I even learned a little Italian. By the end, I could confidently order a cappuccino and marmalade brioche at my favorite cafe and halfway understand passersby. I was an expert when it came to public transportation, and I knew my way around south Milan like the back of my hand. I could also recommend the best gelato, sandwich shops, and kebab joints. It honestly went by too fast. My time there was amazing, and I’m so happy I had the opportunity and resources to make Milan my temporary home.
