Spending time in Europe over the past two and a half weeks was an amazing experience that gave me a broader perspective of the global financial system. Since we began our trip touring the IMF and several regulatory institutions in Washington, DC, to visiting firms and regulators in London, Brussels, Frankfurt, Switzerland, and Paris, I gained a more relevant perspective of the key players and influencers in the global financial system. This trip underscored the importance of trust and relationships in maintaining a stable and healthy global financial system that works to improve the lives of people throughout the world. During our time, it was amazing to observe the cultural differences between countries and how they conducted business in their relevant fields. I enjoyed the opportunities to learn from founders and CEOs of banks, investment managers, and consulting firms who shared their perspectives on how they created value for their customers and investors within their geographic regions. Additionally, it was amazing to observe the culture of European countries. The European business culture seemed to embrace doing business throughout the continent, which contrasts with what I have seen in the United States where many businesses only operate within a single country.
Another unique observation was the firm specific cultures we got to observe through visiting over fifteen businesses and institutions. We had the opportunity to see firms that were very collegial and relaxed, to those that emphasized hard-work, long hours and a cut-throat environment. This was very helpful as I evaluate the type of company, I wish to start my career at and what firm values I align with. This trip widened my perspective to the opportunities within the business world and financial sector beyond North America. After going on the trip, I hope to one day work in a role that engages with business opportunities across multiple continents. The opportunity to participate in the European Financial Management Field Trip has taught me lifelong lessons and given me a unique perspective that will shape my decisions in the future.
