My study abroad program in South Africa turned out to be quite different from what I had anticipated. Cape Town, the city where I spent the most time, surprised me with its resemblance to major cities in the United States. I found many familiar corporations and restaurants lining its streets, which was unexpected. However, Cape Town’s most interesting features lay in its natural surroundings. The city is surrounded by stunning beaches and mountains, offering breathtaking views from almost any area in the city.
South Africa proved to be a melting pot of diverse cultures and rich traditions. Unlike the US, which primarily uses English, South Africa boasts nine national languages. This linguistic diversity provided me with the opportunity to engage with locals, learn different languages, and gain a deeper appreciation for the country?s diversity. One of the most striking differences between South Africa and the United States was the stark contrast in unemployment rates. While the US maintains an unemployment rate of around 3.6%, South Africa struggles with a significant rate of 30%. This disparity shed light on the social and economic challenges faced by the country. I discovered that many individuals in South Africa turned to the informal economy, establishing marketplaces, or engaging in small-scale jobs to support themselves and their families.
Furthermore, from an accounting perspective, my study abroad program provided fascinating insights into the distinctions between the Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in the United States and South Africa’s Chartered Accountants. Through meetings with professionals at prominent firms like PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), private park operations, and government officials, I had the opportunity to delve into the financial intricacies of ecotourism and comprehend the significant influence this industry has on both the local communities and the wildlife in South Africa. In summary, my study abroad experience in South Africa deviated from my initial expectations. While Cape Town resembled major US cities in certain aspects, its natural beauty and cultural diversity made it an unforgettable destination. I was able to witness the social and economic challenges faced by the country, while also immersing myself in its rich traditions and exploring the remarkable history and natural wonders.
