My time abroad in Iceland has been an eye-opening experience that has significantly changed my perspective on conducting business and engaging with individuals in the host country. Initially, when I arrived in Iceland, I was captivated by the unique landscape and volcanic activity. The sight of lava rock covered in moss with the surrounding ocean was truly remarkable. This immediate exposure to Iceland’s natural environment made me realize the importance of embracing and leveraging the country’s natural resources. Attending academic sessions and a visit to Iceland’s NASDAQ office provided valuable insights into Iceland’s energy discussions and economic challenges. Learning about Iceland’s struggle to return to its pre-2008 equity levels and the US’s contrasting progress prompted me to explore this topic further and consider possible reasons for this. Engaging with the Icelandic people and immersing myself in their culture reinforced the importance of adaptability and family-run businesses. Visiting a power plant that operated with automation and remote workers in Reykjavik showcased Iceland’s technological advancements, while interactions with the owner of Eagle Air demonstrated the prevalence of family-run enterprises. This observation aligned with my initial expectations and highlighted the close-knit nature of Icelandic society, as there are only 400,000 people there. Finally, experiencing unique activities like snorkeling between tectonic plates and exploring the blue lagoon further solidified the idea that embracing distinctive Icelandic experiences is crucial. These adventures allowed me to dive into the country’s natural wonders and appreciate the beauty and significance of its landscape. In conclusion, my time in Iceland has transformed my perspective on conducting business and engaging with individuals. I have gained a deep appreciation for the Icelandic people’s resourcefulness, adaptability, and connection to their environment. Seeing their innovative approaches to agriculture, energy, and architecture has broadened my understanding of how businesses can thrive by leveraging local resources. Moreover, interacting with the Icelandic culture and embracing unique experiences has emphasized the importance of cultural immersion and open-mindedness in successful businesses. As I conclude my stay in Iceland, I am grateful for the invaluable lessons I have learned and the lasting impact this experience will have on me.
