I could not have asked for a better study abroad experience. It overwhelmingly exceeded my expectations.
I went into this trip hoping to learn the basics about the Italian culture, but by the end, I felt like a local to Florence. Aperitivo after classes and late-night dinners felt perfectly normal. Eating pasta and pizza as well as drinking espresso and wine were fully integrated into my diet, so much so that eating American foods and eating at 6 o’clock felt strange to me upon my return. Also upon my return to the States, I found myself still using Italian in my greetings and courtesies, as this was what I had grown accustomed to. All of these small things and more were what made me feel like a true Italian.
Apart from integrating into the Italian culture and customs, I grew to love the amazing sights in all of the different cities in Italy. Apart from Florence, I visited Milan, Rome, Pisa, Venice, Cinque Terre, Sienna, and the Tuscany wine countryside. Every place had such a unique experience, with their own special catholic cathedrals and architectures.
Although this country is not my own, part of me wishes it was. Italians share a rich culture of Catholicism, family values, eating rich foods, and drinking wine. I loved it here, and hope to return on my own someday to re-experience this awesome place.
