After nearly a week in Costa Rica, my perception of what it means to be a global citizen has changed drastically. From the initial culture shock to bonding with our host family, to growing closer to fellow students, I already feel like I have gained so much value from this trip. Working with local businesses has been incredible, and getting to see things from a local point of view has been perhaps the most eye-opening experience. Seeing life through my host family?s and local businesses’ eyes has exposed me to what it?s really like to be a Costa Rican, even if we are only scratching the surface.
The natural beauty of the county is stunning from every angle, and within just a few days I have seen some of the most incredible natural landmarks. From a massive waterfall to an active volcano, Costa Rica has not disappointed. As a group of students, we have gotten to know each other quickly and have already made many memories, and I look forward to the remainder of the trip to make some more. My host family has been incredibly welcoming, and we laugh at every meal. The language barrier is certainly a high one, but it is certainly shrinking, and I look forward to building relationships both in and out of the homestay for the remainder of the trip!
