My trip to Barcelona was amazing in so many ways! From arriving at the beginning of January and getting to spend two weeks there, my day-to-day was jam-packed with awesome activities, lessons, and excursions. Anyone reading this now that’s thinking about Spain, or any other faculty-led abroad programs, don’t forget that studying abroad is always a great idea! Amid an ongoing pandemic and much unknown, our guide Cristiana, our professor, and the other adults that supported us made this experience all the better. When it comes to doing business in Spain, I believe it’s more relaxed than what we are used to in the states. From their hours of business to their independence-driven model that can be seen even in the supermarkets with bagging your own groceries to taking out and organizing your own trash. I appreciated how they put an individual responsibility on the citizens and us to carry out those tasks. Their businesses are competitive but just not at the level of intensity we see every day in America. I also believe that here in the states, everything is driven by money and climbing a ladder, whereas, in Spain, they take more time to enjoy the journey and put an emphasis on enjoying the day and enjoying work. I was only abroad for two weeks, so there is so much more to learn and dive deeper into but from my experiences and interactions with local businesses, workers, and owners, that is what I learned. One other thing to note is their dedication and emphasis on family that played a role in their work-life balance and how it differed from ours here in America. I can’t wait to hopefully revisit Spain as its filled with so much rich history and breathtaking architecture with stuff to see and learn everywhere.
