Today I begin my journaling expansion in Barcelona, Spain. The morning started at 8:00am and my classmates and I were able to successfully rendezvous in the lobby before departure to Zurich. Classroom anatomy is more comfortable, though to an extent. AC not being common is an intangible I will definitely have to get used to. Travel to Zurich was accompanied by metro travel to said location. The ability to metro to the numerous locations on schedule is both culturally and logistically efficient, though differs from my experiences in the states. When casually, viewing the architecture from my travels has been exceptionally cool as the Gothic architecture present reflects the rich history Spain has to offer. From a tourist perspective, it’s nice to see this as a majority of buildings I’m used to have an American history style being very western in nature. The fact these elaborate designs were able to withstand the tests of time is phenomenal. This furthers that vast difference in structures. The framework of design seems to be much more efficient in the way they operate as a society: from crosswalks to street signs to multi-vehicle lanes. Efficiency is further alluded to in the designated bins for specific types of waste. Colored bins around the city optimize on a safe and logistically sound system that’s apparent on nearly every corner. Though assumption-based, the collectivism viewed in Barcelona is in contrast to Americans’ individualistic attributes. Much more cohesive in the way the population attributes to the cities internal success and aid.
The cuisines I’ve had the opportunity to consume are magnificent. After a brief overview of the ingredients used to create these dishes I noticed just how ?healthy? the food was. Derived from natural ingredients, the vegetables and sound pork-beef options are anything but processed and make me feel more fulfilled after each bite. Moritz Bar was excellence with its beef beef pasta combination! Restaurants are more local, as opposed to the mass corporate food chains mass-produced in Texas and the US. However, they do exist. This existence is still unique in its own right, being noted in my journey to the local McDonalds. Different menu options provide an entirely new pallet to dive into than your stereotypical American storefronts. McDonalds, Barcelona small details captivate on consumer tendencies that we would view as abnormal. Soft drinks are not refillable and require added cost to acquire a new beverage. Self-serve is practically nonexistent.
I got the chance to tour Cellar Diez outside of Barcelona to see the family-owned business?s winery! Their product of locally loved Vermut combines many flavors that are fresh and smooth. It was nice to see the emphasis of commitment and determination Mr. Diez displayed in his products. It’s nice to hear some insight on the logistical complexities of their supply chain, financial structure, branding opportunities, and image.
We had the gracious opportunity to immerse ourselves in the world-famous Sagrada Familia world-wonder. As mentioned, the artistic capabilities of Antoni Gaudi leave you speechless in Spanish sound architectural presence. Sculpting, attention to detail, and the obvious mass of the church are remarkable, especially given its inception over 100 years ago. Nothing short of protected, sound security measures are in place to preserve and monitor the historical artifact. It’s phenomenal for the masses present, from all over the world, to appreciate the Spanish landmark. I am very blessed to have viewed the religious landmark for its status amongst the city is well respected from what I’ve gathered.
In summary, my first time abroad has been nothing less than exceptional and I am ecstatic to write about my future experiences once indulged in the beautiful city of Barcelona, Spain.
