Week 1 in Barcelona was a dream. It feels like we have been here for a lot longer than a week. The transition from life in the United States to life in Spain has been a lot smoother than I expected it to be. Growing up in San Antonio, surrounded by the rich Hispanic culture has helped me adapt to the culture here in Barcelona. Whether it is the late dinners, siestas, or portions of food, I feel as if it has come easier to me than other kids not from San Antonio. Life in Barcelona moves at a slower pace and I love it. Every meal is a whole ordeal that takes a few hours, and it truthfully relieves some of the stress of life.
This week we took trips to Camp Nou, Arc de Triomf, Casa Mila, Montserrat, and Freixenet. I have been an F.C. Barcelona fan ever since I was old enough to comprehend professional sports. It was so fascinating to walk throughout the museum and learn things about the club that I love so much. Furthermore, the stadium is breathtaking. Not to hate on Kyle Field, but the Camp Nou is spectacular. I walked by the Arc de Triomf with a group of friends. It was very fascinating to look at and is so big! Casa Mila was a planned trip with the entire program. Casa Mila is another one of Antoni Gaudi?s famous pieces of architecture. My group for the MGMT 450 class we are currently taking is studying the architecture of Barcelona, so this excursion was a huge help and extremely informational. The last two trips we took this past Friday. Montserrat is a monastery about an hour outside of Barcelona. As a Catholic, this was extremely fascinating and a very special experience. The history of this monastery is very unique and is one of the reasons this place attracts so many tourists. Freixenet is the world leader in quality cava. We toured the winery and were able to learn about the entire process of production. This facility was breathtaking, and the cava was even better. The excursions this week were all very enjoyable and I am looking forward to this next week?s excursions.
Outside of the excursions, we were able to play golf in Caldes, visit the bunkers, which overlook the city, and enjoy the sunny beaches of Barcelona. The weather has been so beautiful and that made for a very fun round of golf with my classmates. The bunkers were quite a hike away but the views from the top of the mountain were exceptional. We ate dinner up at the top of the mountain and enjoyed the view for a few hours. The beach is always a good time. We have continued our tradition of trying new beaches every time we go, and it has worked out pretty well so far.
Last, but most definitely not least, class has been great. Both classes are very interesting and both teachers are fascinating to listen to. I am looking forward to the next two weeks of class and to all that Barcelona has to offer!
