I believe that a great college education gives students a well-rounded set of skills and understanding of the world around them. While it is of course important to focus on an area of study and become an expert in that field, it is important for students to pursue other areas of interest and experiences that challenge and broaden their current perspectives. With this in mind, it has always been a priority of mine to study abroad. A study abroad trip is such a valuable experience because it allows students to take what they have learned in the classroom back home and see these things in person. It brings learning to a whole new level. Learning in a classroom environment is great, but there is no substitute for hands-on and in-person learning. Furthermore, on study abroad trips, students are able to experience an entirely different culture and meet people with very different perspectives, enhancing their understanding of the world around them. For these reasons, I knew I wanted to make time in college for a study abroad trip.
When browsing the options that Mays Busines School offered, I saw the Spain Business trip and knew it was the perfect fit. With my interests in business combined with my desire to learn about the Spanish culture (my dad studied in Madrid in college), this trip sounded fantastic to me. I am extremely excited to learn about international business and the economics of the European Union as it combines my economic and business interests with gaining a deeper understanding of Spain. I know that I will learn valuable lessons and information from both Dr. Panina and Professor Gundin and am excited for these classes.
Furthermore, I am also ready to learn outside the classroom and really educate myself in Barcelona by being immersed in the culture. I am excited to go to the beach, eat the food, talk to the people, and walk the streets. This hands-on experience paired with my in-class learning will hopefully give me an in-depth understanding of Barcelona. Being here in Barcelona in person will enhance and bring context to what I am learning in the classroom.
After my first few days in Barcelona, I have already loved my time and recognize even further what a valuable experience this trip is. To name a few highlights so far, we have toured the Sagrada Familia, traveled to the beach, experienced the Barcelona nightlife, and done a scavenger hunt around the city. I am living in the Sant Antoni district, which is full of life and great food. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning to navigate the city and using the metro as we try restaurants all around the city and become accustomed to the way of life in Barcelona. We have also had our first day of classes, and it was fascinating to begin learning about the economics of the EU and about International Business.
As I look forward to the whole trip ahead of me, I cannot wait to continue to get to know the city and build relationships with the group of students here and with locals. My goal is to have an excellent understating of Spanish culture, customs, politics, dining, and people by the end of this trip. I know that the time will move quickly, so I plan to be intentional and waste no time while I am here. I am excited for the adventure ahead and am open-minded and ready to learn and experience new things.
