It’s only been a couple of days into the program, and our group has seen so much. We are currently staying in Lisbon, Portugal, a city of history and beautiful architecture. On our first walking tour of the city, we learned that every piece was created with a specific purpose and meaning. (The sidewalks for example are black and white to represent the Lisbon flag.) The architecture of the buildings throughout Portugal reflects the different styles of the many kings and showcases the rich history. The cities surrounding Lisbon have been amazing as well. From the historic royal grounds of Sintra to the breathtaking views of the Atlantic ocean from Cascais, there is so much to see in Portugal. Our amazing guide, Paula, and bus driver, Alfonso, have shared so much about Portugal and its people. (Fun Fact: It is common for many people in Portugal to know three languages!!)
It’s only been a couple of days into my study abroad and we have visited a cork farm, olive oil farm, and bakery. The visits have been very interactive, from olive oil tasting to learning how to bake pastel de nata, a traditional Portuguese dessert. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn and visit many of the businesses that Portugal is known for. Many of the businesses here emphasize sustainability and providing for the community!
We are finishing up our time in Lisbon and will be traveling to Porto, Portugal for the remainder of our program. I am so excited to explore northern Portugal and learn more about its history!
