Leading up to my study abroad experience I didn’t quite know what to expect. Going abroad for any reason has always been a dream of mine so when I found out about this program it seemed like the perfect opportunity! I had never been to Spain prior to this trip, but have had many friends and relatives travel here who gave me lots of tips. Listening to all of their experiences and suggestions built up my excitement even more. I was told countless times to go to the markets, try paella, brush up on my Spanish, and not waste any time because the five weeks fly by. I also was warned about pickpockets and to not stay out too late, which made me slightly nervous. Every time I got asked what my plans for the summer were, I got such a kick out of telling people I’d be flying to Spain in just a couple of weeks. They always told me how happy they were for me to have this experience, especially during such unsure times with the Covid-19 outbreaks.
The elephant in the room was always the unknown factor of whether this trip would truly happen with the Covid-19 pandemic. For weeks at the beginning of this process, I didn’t let myself get my hopes up that this trip would happen, even though I wished it would. I knew that until I had my two feet on the ground of Barcelona, it would be a worry in the back of my mind that the trip would get canceled. The second we landed a weight was lifted off my shoulders and I was ready to go (mask on of course).
During the first half of this summer, I didn’t have very many plans. I lived at home and took a summer school course, babysat for some spending money, and basically just relaxed while anxiously waiting for July 8th to come faster. I knew that when I get back on August 13th, I’d have a quick turnaround to moving into my house in college station. Therefore, packing for this trip as well as all my furniture and items for my return to college was a stressful task. Even though that was a bit of a low point, I was extremely grateful to be able to go on this trip. The rush to get organized was a small price to pay for all the fun I knew I would have in Spain.
In the few days since I’ve arrived, all stress and uncertainty faded away. It’s been non-stop activity and learning about the culture which has been super intriguing. My roommates and I clicked from the start and all have the same desire to seize every second in this beautiful city. I mean, it’s hard to complain when la Sagrada Familia is right outside your apartment! I only have positive things to say so far. I am looking forward to all the activities I have planned, as well as the spontaneous adventures that will soon be over and looked back on as the best summer of my life.
