One week has passed since I got home from Portugal, and I miss it so much already! After having some time to reflect on the memories I created, the lessons I learned, and the cultural experiences, I truly am glad that Portugal ended up being our final destination. Personally, I loved the mix of history, unique culture, and national pride Portugal had to offer.
My favorite event was visiting the Douro Valley outside of Porto. In this region of rolling hills, wide rivers, and green forests, farmers grow grapes which will eventually be made into the famous port wine. We visited a small winery and cellar called Quinta do Tedo, where we tasted a few variations of port and learned the ins and outs of producing Portugal’s signature beverage. The incredible views and delicious wines made for a very pleasant day.
It was also very interesting to see the cork industry of Portugal. Cork oak trees are a very long-term investment, needing up to 40 years to grow before their bark is viable to produce stoppers or other products. In the United States, we often don’t think that far in advance and operate very quickly. It was a good reminder to slow down, be patient, and respect the land that gives us so much. I will take the lessons learned from the local cork farmers with me into my career.
Overall, Portugal was a life-changing experience, and I am so thankful for everyone I met on the trip. Portugal will have a special place in my heart forever! At? logo, Portugal!!
