In my travels in South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe thus far, I have already learned much about the differences and similarities between Africa and the United States. The United States has many benefits that African countries do not possess, such as constant power and electricity, a relatively low unemployment rate, and overall increased safety. South Africa has a shortage of power, so it must load shed and turn off power for certain parts of the day. This makes it difficult to have successful businesses because the power is not consistent. Additionally, unemployment rates in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Africa are fairly high, which makes it difficult for citizens to provide for their families. The places are similar in that most people are kind and intelligent. They are both rich in resources, as well. Africa possesses nature minerals, such as diamonds and copper, and wild animals that are unique to their part of the world. Africa is beautiful and people travel from across the world to see it, which is similar to certain parts of the United States, as well. Each place has unique features that draw in visitors. Additionally, they both have economies that are trying to balance different government initiatives to help people while increasing business. Overall, I hope to learn about a perspective that is different than mine. Africa is very different than the United States in many ways, so I am excited to learn more about their culture. I want to go outside of my comfort zone and visit somewhere I have never been. Also, business is international in today?s age, so understanding the perspectives of different cultures is key to success. Travel is one of the best ways to learn about other people and grow a global mindset. If I work with African people in the future, I will understand them better because I have been to their home countries.
