After three amazing weeks in Austria’s capital, Vienna has found a special place in my heart. My initial thoughts and feelings reflected that of a person unfamiliar with local customs and culture. The Texan pride in me found it difficult to relate and accept how different life can be worldwide. I was able, however, to more fully immerse myself in the city, its people, and its traditions while humbling myself to truly appreciate the beauty that Vienna holds.
One of the most significant changes in my perspective was understanding the concept of work-life balance. The Austrians’ approach to life where professional and personal lives are balanced with a clear emphasis on leisure and wellbeing was striking. I was surprised by how businesses would close early in the afternoon and how Sundays were reserved for rest. This was a stark contrast to the fast-paced, always-on mentality I was accustomed to in the United States. Over time, I grew to appreciate this rhythm of life. I had greater value for my quality time, whether it was spent in nature, with family, or enjoying a leisurely afternoon at a café.
In an academic sense, my time at the Vienna University of Economics and Business challenged my initial impressions of what European education would be. I expected a more traditional, lecture-based approach which is common at Texas A&M, but what I experienced was an interactive learning environment. The emphasis on critical thinking, group discussions, and real-world applications of theory was something that not only enriched my academic experience but also broadened my understanding of global economic issues. The diverse student body further enhanced my learning, as I was exposed to a variety of perspectives and approaches to problem-solving from dozens of different countries and cultures.
Culturally, living in Vienna shattered my initial notion of the city as somewhat reserved or formal. The city’s cultural vibrancy, with its rich blend of tradition and modernity, became a backdrop for countless meaningful experiences, from impromptu conversations with locals to participating in festivals and events that celebrated both the old and the new.
In summary, my time in Vienna was a journey of both affirmation and revelation. While some of my initial impressions held true, many were nuanced or completely transformed by my lived experiences. The exchange program not only deepened my academic knowledge but also expanded my worldview, instilling in me a greater appreciation for cultural diversity and a more balanced approach to life.
