Howdy! My name is Julia Stephens and I am currently studying abroad in Milan, Italy for the Spring 2025 semester. I wanted to take the time to share some of my initial impressions of the city and university for any other students who are considering to pursue a study abroad of their own!
First thing I noticed was that the people were abnormally attractive here in Milan. I’m kidding… not really. Since walking out of the airport, I was taken aback by how good-looking everyone was. I simply assumed there were something in the water and that I better start drinking. I quickly found out I had landed in the midst of Milan fashion week and that the city was hosting some of the most prestigious models on the planet. Which, on the other hand, is also mind blowing– I am literally walking on the same ground as some of the biggest names in fashion industry. I’m basically an honorary designer.
All jokes aside, the city on its own is an incredible collage of elaborate architecture and breathtaking art. Walks down the street are simply another medium for retelling history. The developed public transportation makes commuting both accessible and ideal. I can reach any corner of the city with minimal issue. Bocconi, my host university, is an incredible prestigious Italian business school– and I can see why. The campus is modern and well-maintained with incredible professors and a talented student body. Simply surrounding myself with these individuals has motivated me to reach new heights and become more culturally informed.
For anyone considering visiting or committing to a program at Bocconi, I could write an essay explaining how the food alone is worth it. But to summarize, the meals alone are an incredible insight to the Italian culture and history. Each meal is a ritual with clearly defined do’s and dont’s– one that Italians take great pleasure in conducting. The restaurants and cafes are plentiful and each well-run. I fear these flavorful dishes and mouth-watering pasta have spoiled my palate, because I never want to leave.
Overall, I have had great first impressions of the city and its kind people. I can’t wait to see what these months will have in store for me.
