As I reflect on my time abroad, I am shocked by the impact it has had on my understanding of global entrepreneurship and development. As a student studying business, I primarily learn about huge organizations with millions of dollars to use for a single project. Rarely do I get to interact with and learn about the businesses like the ones Global Brigades helped in Panama. What stuck with me the most was the resilience and resourcefulness of the individuals we worked with. From economic hardships to limited access to resources, these micro-entrepreneurs demonstrated a strong sense of determination and creativity. Witnessing this really challenged my notions about what it means to be an entrepreneur and reinforced my belief in the transformative power of entrepreneurship as a tool for empowerment. Additionally, I was able to see the interaction of cultural dynamics that shape our client’s business ventures first-hand. Going into this program, I understood the importance family and community played in Panama, but seeing this in a business context was inspiring. My client specifically had a lot of support around him when we were working with him. It’s important to note that these entrepreneurs create businesses to support their families out of necessity, which is why our work is crucial.
Going to Panama with Global Business Brigades shifted my view of business on a worldwide scale. As mentioned, I have learned a very privileged view of business and this trip has deconstructed that mindset. My initial impressions have been greatly humbled and I could not have anticipated the impact that has been left through this opportunity. Overall, my time abroad has been nothing short of transformative, challenging me to expand my horizons, and embrace the complexities of global entrepreneurship. As I continue my education, I’m excited to use the knowledge and perspectives gained from this experience.
