If you are ever looking to find Texan hospitality in another country, you may just find it in Costa Rica. I never expected to feel so at home during my first experience abroad. The kind and friendly atmosphere of the Costa Rican culture welcomed me and the rest of my team effortlessly. From attending a church service at Iglesia La Gracia and being greeted by the local pastor, to befriending our tour guide, San Jose never treated us as we were strangers. The culture of Costa Rica made serving the local community easy. Our team partnered with a local ministry, Face of Justice (FOJ), whose mission is to offer young women in the sex trafficking industry a second chance. Our team woke up each day eager to serve in whatever way needed. We found ourselves serving in places that we were unworthy to be and meeting people that we were so unworthy to know. We had the privilege of being entrusted with these women?s stories and the invaluable opportunity to grow in our empathy.
This trip is genuinely one of the coolest experiences I have ever gotten to be a part of. I had the opportunity to be a part of the planning process of this trip, and it was incredible to see something our leadership has been planning since last April come together. In a short few days, our group grew both professionally and personally. We had the chance to hear from international business professionals, and also build our personal friendships within our group.
I am so thankful to all those who made this trip possible. I will cherish the lessons learned and memories made with me forever. While the impact of this week will last forever, I will have to be back soon for some more fresh pineapple and coffee!
