Wow! Flying into Hong Kong by myself had me wondering what I had just gotten into. As I flew into this cloudy land with no known friends I was wondering if I was in over my head. I didn’t know the language, I barely had the currency, and not much was known about the University I would be studying at, but all that began to fade away as soon as I got in the cab. The driver was friendly and spoke English well, as he told me of the time he spent studying at the University of Melbourne. I didn’t feel particularly chatty though as looking out the window kept most of my attention. This was a forest of concrete spanning as far as the eye could see. A true marvel of modern engineering. I knew at that point that I was going to be in for a treat here at HKUST!!
Everyone in Hong Kong has been so friendly to me so far. I’ve loved every interaction I’ve had and have felt beyond blessed to be encountered by such an international group of people. My horizons are being broadened more and more every day. I’m incredibly impressed with the business school here. I’ve had three lectures now, and each has been incredibly fascinating, led by our well-informed professor from Seoul. My favorite spot in the school is a study room overlooking beautiful Clearwater Bay. Sometimes I stroll by just to glance out the window. Though this region is incredibly urban, it is not without it’s natural wonders. Photos don’t do it justice. Just get to Hong Kong!!!
The biggest difference I’ve seen between here and home is the food. 🙂 I miss Texas food so much. I’m nearly two weeks in at this point, and I’d start a fight for some Tex-Mex or good and proper BBQ by now. Other than that, this place is a real treat. I am truly on the adventure of a lifetime. I’m not regretting a thing!!
