During my time in Morocco, I learned that businesses there prioritize leveraging their strengths to navigate challenges and thrive. For example, we visited ED Trust, a firm specializing in audit and advisory services, where we gained insight into conducting business in a country heavily reliant on agriculture while facing a severe drought. ED Trust demonstrated how Moroccan businesses innovate while remaining grounded in familiar practices to avoid abrupt changes that could disrupt people’s lives. The speaker mentioned that they avoid a big switch for that specific reason, even with the drought challenges. They also highlighted the significant issue of the informal economy, where cash transactions dominate, and taxes often go unpaid. To address this, there is a push toward having more digital payment systems to strengthen the economy and improve government revenue. Another impactful visit was to a store that exclusively employs women with disabilities, providing them with stable jobs and opportunities they might not otherwise have. This visit reflected a broader focus in Morocco on supporting people and ensuring the well-being of its citizens. When compared to the United States, where capitalism leads to profit being the main focus of a business, Moroccan businesses appear to prioritize the balance between profitability and the well-being of their customers and communities. Obviously, businesses in Morocco are still looking to generate revenue, but there is a noticeable emphasis on ensuring that business practices benefit all parties involved, not just the owners. I expected there to be differences between Moroccan and U.S. business operations, but I underestimated the extent to which customer satisfaction and societal well-being influence decision-making in Morocco. Witnessing the care that these workers have for the people they serve deepened my appreciation for how businesses can thrive by fostering a sense of shared success. My time abroad has shown me the value of incorporating empathy and community focus into business strategies, a perspective I hope to carry forward in my future endeavors.
