Now that I have returned from my time in Spain, I have had a chance to reflect on how much I learned, both about international business practices and about engaging with people from a different cultural background. The experience challenged many of my initial expectations and gave me a much broader perspective than I had when I first arrived. Before arriving in Barcelona, I had assumptions about how business might be conducted abroad, but nothing compares to the reality of seeing it up close and living it day by day. The first thing I was surprised to learn about is how regional identity can influence business greatly. For example, Catalonia has its own language, customs, and strong cultural pride, which often carries into the way companies market themselves and operate. I initially assumed the European Union made things feel more unified across the continent, but I quickly realized that each region holds tightly to its identity and traditions. This is a reminder that cultural sensitivity goes far beyond national boundaries. Beyond the business insights, one of the most impactful parts of my time abroad was simply learning how to navigate a new environment with confidence. From ordering food in Spanish to using public transportation, each small challenge helped me become more independent and resilient. I learned how to adapt quickly, ask questions when I was unsure, and embrace the unfamiliar. These skills, while not taught in a classroom, are incredibly valuable in both personal and professional settings. In the workplace, especially in roles that involve working with international teams or managing diverse employees, being able to step outside of your comfort zone and respond flexibly is essential. This experience in Spain taught me how to do exactly that, and I now feel more prepared to handle new situations and interact with people from different backgrounds with greater cultural sensitivity and awareness. Looking back at my first impressions concerning the slower pace of life, the relaxed environment, and the beauty of the city, I can now say they were accurate, but my understanding of it has deepened. These aren’t just surface-level observations, but reflections of values that shape everything from daily life to how people work together. This trip has not only expanded my global awareness but also changed the way I view a culture’s role in business. I feel more prepared to work with diverse teams in the future, and more motivated than ever to keep learning from people different from myself.
