This week was my first time ever visiting Spain! I was a little nervous and not sure what to expect when I first arrived, but in just one short week I have already learned so much about Barcelona and its unique culture. I have tried all the traditional tapas, explored the city, and started developing lifelong friendships!
Trying traditional foods is an important aspect of experiencing a new culture. Spain is known for it’s tapas, small dishes similar to appetizers that are served in almost every local restaurant. The Pan de Tomate pictured to the right is a traditional tapas dish, and one of my favorites. I also enjoy the Patatas Bravas, cubed potatoes with a spicy tomato sauce drizzled on top. Tapas are an integral part of Spanish culture, and it has been one of my favorite ways to experience life here!
I have learned how to navigate the metro system, a very common mode of transportation here in Barcelona. Using the metro, it takes about 40 minutes to get from the apartments to class. Since the two are in different areas of the city, we have been able to explore both! The picture to the left was taken near where our classes are held. We have also explored outside of these two areas and deeper into the heart of Barcelona by visiting the Gothic Quarter and Las Ramblas, two famous attractions of the city.
There are about 30 other students from Texas A&M participating in the same program as me! We are all staying at the same apartment complex, taking the same classes, and exploring the city together. Experiencing such a unique and incredible opportunity together has already begun to form amazing friendships within this group, and I am excited to continue to form this community over the next 3 weeks!
