To start off this reflection, I want to say that this program went way beyond my expectations, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to study abroad. I returned with many new cultural and professional experiences that only added to my existing knowledge of the world and business.
During our time in Singapore and Thailand, we met with four companies, all in different industries. One of the most interesting visits was with Thai Airways. They were incredibly engaging and open about their business operations. We learned about the equivalent of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Thailand and how they are restructuring to meet the regulatory requirements set in Thailand. It was fascinating to learn about the similarities and differences between the regulatory business environments in Thailand and the U.S. Additionally, it was interesting to see how they leverage their cultural differences compared to other countries to establish their brand.
Another learning experience I thoroughly enjoyed was our visit to Betagro. They were very open to answering our questions and helped us understand the implications of international business. As a company that operates in multiple countries with different cultures, they emphasized the importance of cultural awareness and learning to best expand their business practices across multiple countries.
Outside of the business knowledge, between the planned cultural experiences and the free time we had to explore the countries on our own, I learned so much about the cultures of Singapore and Thailand. In Singapore, we visited the Peranakan Museum, which opened my eyes to the diverse mix of cultures that Singapore is built on. I was also extremely grateful that our program allowed us a lot of free time to explore the city on our own. Because of this, we got to see Chinatown, the Financial District, explore hawker markets, and navigate public transportation. This not only allowed me to experience different parts of the culture in Singapore but also helped me develop personally and become more independent.
In Bangkok, we had an amazing tour guide who took us through the palaces, temples, and historical villages of Bangkok. I learned so much about the history, religion, and royal family of Thailand. Without this organized tour, I would never have learned so much about the country.
All in all, this trip was an incredible opportunity for me to develop personally and professionally. I got to meet amazing people that I know I will stay in touch with beyond our travels, and it also brought me closer to the friends I went with. I am so grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to study abroad again.
