Prior to my visit to Singapore, my concept of the economy revolved around local, regional, and nationwide operations, with the United States standing out as the financial powerhouse. While acknowledging that business extended beyond U.S. borders, my focus was limited, mainly fixated on manufacturing imports from China. However, the two weeks spent in Singapore broadened my understanding of what the term ‘economy’ truly encapsulates.
During our business meetings, hosts highlighted Singapore’s unique economic landscape—devoid of natural resources, relying solely on import and export activities. The key to their success lies in excelling in specific sectors. Notably, Singapore has mastered financial services, electronic and machinery manufacturing, and exports, along with efficient supply chains. As the world’s busiest cargo sea port, their expertise in providing services has been instrumental in sustaining their economy.
This experience has shifted my perspective towards a more holistic understanding of the economy. I now recognize that the realm of business extends far beyond mere imports from China, emphasizing the intricate interplay of various industries on a global scale.
Another interesting thing that caught me by surprise when we first began to venture around Singapore was the mass amount of escalators. Singapore residents really don’t like to take the stairs haha. However, the escalators served as our introduction to the unspoken rules and cultural courtesies embedded in Singaporean society. Notably, when standing on an escalator, the customary practice is to hug the left wall, allowing space for those who choose to walk up. This unspoken agreement reflects the consideration and respect embedded in their culture. Further, we noticed similar courteous norms on public transportation. Reserved seats on buses and subways are not only designated for the handicapped but also for the elderly and women. It is expected that men willingly yield their seats to women if no other seating is available. This insightful glimpse into their mindful culture underscores their emphasis on consideration and social awareness.
