Returning home after my time in Qatar, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences and lessons I gained during my stay. Qatar is a unique blend of tradition and modernity, a nation that has transformed rapidly thanks to its natural resources.
One of the most striking aspects of Qatar is its deep respect for tradition. Whether it was walking through Souq Waqif, or visiting the Museum of Islamic Art, I was constantly reminded of the country’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity. At the same time, I saw breathtaking skyscrapers and modern architecture that symbolize Qatar’s ambitious vision for the future.
Another highlight was the warmth and hospitality of the people. Despite cultural differences, I felt welcomed everywhere I went. The locals and students’ genuine interest in sharing their traditions and learning about mine created an enriching cultural exchange that I will always treasure.
Living in a society with such a distinct economic structure was also eye-opening. Qatar’s reliance on government subsidies to ensure access to essentials like housing, food, and healthcare creates a stability that’s drastically different from the market-driven economy in America.
I will say, out of the whole trip, dune bashing in the desert was probably the coolest and most exciting thing I’ve ever done in my life. Even though the driver and I came from completely different backgrounds and opposite parts of the world, I got to experience firsthand how adventure and excitement can bring people together. It didn’t matter that our lives were so different, we were just people enjoying an incredible experience.
More than anything, my time in Qatar taught me the value of adaptability, curiosity, and the importance of understanding different perspectives. As I move forward, I hope to carry these lessons with me and apply them to future opportunities and challenges.
