My time in Costa Rica is something I will never forget. Through this experience, I have gained valuable insights into how international business is conducted and how different countries interact in a culturally distinct environment. What has made this experience so special is the blend of professional and personal relationships I have formed in Costa Rica. This has completely reshaped my international business perspective.
One of the most surprising things we have learned about conducting business in Costa Rica is the emphasis on personal connections. Unlike America, Costa Rican culture values building trust before dealing with business formalities. This might be seen as mindless chit-chat, but in Costa Rica, it is the foundation of a good business deal. The concept of “tico time,” highlighting the importance of taking time to connect on a personal level, was unexpected but profoundly impactful.
Additionally, the commitment to environmental sustainability in Costa Rican business practices has been inspiring. This is something I found extremely refreshing. When having dinner with a local, they said, “We’re a small country, so being known for our environmental sustainability is a good look; it makes me so proud.” This unexpected focus on sustainability aligns with a growing global awareness of corporate responsibility, providing a practical example of how businesses can contribute to environmental conservation. To know that the locals also deeply value their eco-friendly business successes was extremely heartwarming and made it all feel worth it.
These two short weeks spent in Costa Rica have provided me with a unique lens when viewing global business practices. The emphasis on personal relationships, the influence of “pura vida” on professional interactions, and the commitment to sustainability have collectively transformed my perspective.
