My time in Costa Rica was truly an eye opening experience that changed how I see the world and business as a whole. It was one thing to learn about Costa Rica in our pre-departure meetings but it was entirely different to see it firsthand. I gained lots of hands on experience in both professional and cultural aspects. Every company visit, classroom lecture, cultural activity and even staying with a host family challenged my way of thinking and taught me something new. The difference between Costa Rica and the United States was evident through the workplace, relationships and communication. These things have given me deeper insight that will help to shape my future career.
In the United States I have seen that the workplace is fast paced and very individualistic. Professional relationships are often harder to establish and take more effort to maintain overtime. In Costa Rica however business seemed more relaxed and relationship focused. Interactions often began with a genuine conversation and there was a visible emphasis on community. At Sibu and Bici Chocolate I noticed how teamwork and relationships were prioritized. Often people care deeply about the job that they have or the work that they produce. Work is often viewed as an extension of community and even family. Communication also felt more warm and less rushed in and out of business practices. These differences highlighted that business success is not just about processes or climbing to the top, it is more about respect and connection to the Pura Vida lifestyle and each other.
The specific program activities that we had scheduled broadened my perspective more than I could have ever imagined. Staying with host families forced me to adapt, communicate across cultural barriers and appreciate simple routines. Sharing stories with our Momma Tika helped me see how Costa Rica values and cherishes their lifestyle. The company visits revealed how sustainability, social responsibility and local partnerships are deeply rooted into Costa Rican business. I could apply what we learned in the lectures to business and cultural visits to help connect the dots and see how deep of an impact each person and business cares to make.
This trip helped to shift my perspective on what a successful business looks like. I learned that success depends on relationships, adaptability and connection. Studying in Costa Rica taught me to be more empathetic, thoughtful and mindful through business practices. I am grateful for the lessons I learned and I will continue to carry them throughout my life to make me more successful in the long run.
