When it comes to the Roman Empire, most people would refer to the TikTok trend. However, the legacy of the Roman Empire can’t be expressed through words. Just being in the Colosseum makes you feel like an ant and the wave of age just hits you. Rome has left a significant impact on the world and advanced many new ideals.
One of the famous sayings is that “All Roads lead to Rome” but as our tour guide mentioned, instead of all roads lead to Rome, all roads depart from Rome. This phrase alone shows how Rome was the center of the world. I won’t go on forever talking about history. When arriving in Rome, my first impression was that it was a busy city and indeed it was. It was very diverse and had many things going on. There is the Colosseum and down the street you can find a church ready to shine their holy light. What came out as a surprise is that the Colosseum was very well kept for a time period and then all the churches decided to take whatever it had left and use that to build the churches. This is similar to the temples of Athens. The lesson I learned from this history is that no one can survive the passage of time and when beliefs are forgotten, they too will become history.
The Roman Empire came from what is left of Greece. They learned from them and built on top of it. They took the Greek mythologies and changed their names to turn them into Roman gods. They also took some architectural features from Greece, like Columns. Most importantly they took ideas from the Greek. They took ideas like democracy. The Romans also built on top of the Greeks. They add their own architectural styles like arches and domes They adapted their own beliefs with Christianity. The Romans also expanded their borders reaching England and the Middle East. This also meant that the Romans had a larger influence compared to the Greeks, hence they are called the Roman Empire.
In the end, what the Roman Empire was able to achieve was built on top of Greece and innovated with much more. They left a remarkable legacy and had ups and downs. They were the one of the first powerful global empires and had a system that many could still learn today.
