The second leg of our trip in Rome has been equally as unforgettable as our time spent in Athens.
In the short time we have had the opportunity to spend in this great city we have visited many places with historic significance such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and the Vatican. Being an ancient city it is incredible to see how much of its history is still standing and how well it has been preserved two thousand years after its creation.
Our time in Rome has also been a huge learning experience in global leadership which is fitting since this is the home of the greatest world power to ever exist. We have been able to learn from the examples of a number of great Roman leaders including Julius Caesar, Augustus, and Hadrian. I thought it was extremely valuable to learn the qualities that made these people strong and successful leaders and what they had in common. We have also learned how massive the influence of the Roman Empire was due to these leaders. The Roman influence can be found in so many aspects of our lives today, for example, legal systems, architecture, and religion. On top of this, it was also interesting to note the similarities between the late Roman Empire and the current landscape of the United States.
This past week I have enjoyed immersing myself in Italian culture. My favorite part of this was the night we attended a Roma soccer game. This was unlike any game I have experienced in America due to the passion of the fans. I loved the songs the supporters sang before the game started, and I couldn’t help but think it was kind of similar to our yells or how we sing The Spirit of Aggieland or the War Hymn before our games. Also, as someone that has always liked Italian food in America I also enjoyed this chance to try the authentic versions of the foods I eat at home. The food in Italy was different from our adaptation of the original, but I thought it was great.
I have had an incredible time in Rome learning about global leadership and its history. I think that with the lessons learned about this city and its numerous leaders I can become a better leader myself in the world today.
