As I reflect on my experience in Doha, I am thankful that I was able to see a glimpse of the Middle East. Visiting Qatar challenged my assumptions of the culture and lifestyle of the region. Similar to America, Qatar is a place that may be characterized by cultural infusion and modernism. This was my first experience in a country that operates with theocratic governance. The discipline and adherence to region was profound. The architecture of the local areas aligned with my expectations of a traditional Middle Eastern culture, yet the city skyline had some of the most modern buildings I had ever seen. Qatar seemed to be a place that struck a balance between the future and the past of the Middle East.
Being in a religious environment, it was interesting to adopt a different lifestyle for two weeks. Fridays and Saturdays were the new weekend. My clothing was always modest. I listened to the call to prayer every day. And finally, I did not have a sip of alcohol. It was a very unfamiliar way of living, yet the experience was very significant. My perspective on this culture has changed meaningfully. It is no better or worse than ours, just different.
We made friends with some local people who lived in Qatar and we had the chance to experience their lives. Despite the differences in culture, there was certainly a lot in common with how they spend their time and how we spend ours.
My experience in Qatar was very productive from a learning perspective and I am intrigued to learn more about new countries. I am grateful of the opportunity to see different parts of the country as well as the business side. There is still a great amount to learn and I committed to keeping an open perspective as I continue to travel.
