My first three days in Singapore have been filled with exploration and excitement. On our first day, our GAV leader, Sharon, gave us all transit cards to use for Singapore’s MRT (mass rapid transit) which is basically a cleaner version of New York City’s subway system. Since Singapore is an island, cars have to be shipped over here so it is not uncommon for Singaporeans to not have cars and use the MRT. We have been utilizing the MRT system a lot, as it can take us across the whole country in such a short amount of time. Another thing I couldn’t help but notice was the rain. Currently in December/January, it is monsoon season, making it very humid and frequent rain showers. There has not been a day that it has not rained, and my umbrella has definitely been useful. However, the rain does not take away from Singapore’s beauty. During our initial tour of the country, I was surprised to learn that Singapore only gained independence in the 1960’s. There is so much growth that has happened over this short period of time, and it is very impressive to view the state of Singapore now knowing how quickly it took off. When walking around the city, I especially appreciated the juxtaposition of the old buildings in the middle that hold so much history and the modern, tall skyscrapers surrounding these buildings. It’s an interesting balance of history and modernization that makes Singapore so unique. We have dined at very cultural and unique restaurants, taking me out of my comfort zone. However, I was pleasantly surprised with everything we have eaten and am challenging myself to try even more! As the trip goes on, I’m excited to see the companies that we visit and learn more about business and culture in Singapore.
