After participating in our first class, I knew the trip to New Zealand would be eye-opening. Most of the class, if not all, had never been to the Southern Hemisphere, let alone New Zealand or Australia. Before the trip, classmates presented various aspects of New Zealand, ranging from how to follow cultural norms to interesting places to visit. One of the most notable aspects of New Zealand that stood out was the diverse environmental landscape, offering a unique blend of mountains, beaches, and lush greenery. The amount of nature within the city is unmatched by any large city that I have visited in the United States. After landing in Auckland, I can confirm how special New Zealand is. Auckland itself is a bustling city with a mix of cultures and landscapes.
The Māori culture plays a big role in day-to-day life. The Māori people were native to New Zealand before it was colonized. They serve heavily on the All Black rugby team as they perform pregame speeches. Not only do the speeches hype up the team, but also the people watching in the stands, as many of the spectators are of Māori descent. This is similar to the United States, but it holds a greater meaning to us.
In the realm of communication, I observed that New Zealanders are very direct when expressing themselves. This straightforward communication style contrasts with the often assertive approach of Americans. It has been intriguing to witness how this difference in communication style plays out in professional and social settings.
From this global experience, I hope to gain a new perspective on how business is conducted in another country. I’m particularly interested in understanding how New Zealanders effectively navigate communication challenges within their diverse cultural background. Learning about the adaptability of individuals when dealing with difficult or unfamiliar business environments is a key aspect of my exploration. I look forward to gaining insights that will not only contribute to my academic and professional growth but will also foster a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of global business practices.
