Within the first week of my time here in Costa Rica, I have been presented with multiple experiences to learn new things and have been frequently encouraged out of my comfort zone. In my time here I have learned all about the emphasis on cultural intelligence and adaptability. I have been fortunate enough to experience time in several cities of Costa Rica, but the city of Heredia has absolutely taken the cake. Heredia is a refreshing mix of charm and tradition amongst the streets. Each road has people eager to engage in conversation and become a friendly face. This has created a sense of community different from anything I’ve seen in the United States. The kind manner of each person I’ve met has made me feel welcome and has made me excited to immerse myself in the culture.
Costa Rica, as a host country, has been nothing but wonderful! The lush green landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and commitment to environmental sustainability have been evident from the second I arrived. One of the cultural aspects that has piqued my interest is the emphasis on ecological responsibility. I have become fascinated with the different ways businesses manage to integrate sustainability into their companies. Since embarking on this journey, I have grown eager to gain knowledge of how global businesses operate, especially in a country with a distinct cultural and economic landscape. I have been shocked to learn about the vast extent that marketing really does to a business.
From a cultural standpoint, one of the most different from the US is the concept of “pura vida”. Pura Vida is a saying meaning pure life and here it’s a lifestyle. As opposed to the United States which typically applauds and encourages a fast-paced and hectic lifestyle, Costa Ricans strive to have easygoing and relaxed lifestyles. This promotes a stress-free environment, and I am soaking up every moment of it!
As I spend my time here in Costa Rica I look forward to growing in knowledge, trying new things, and getting out of my comfort zone!
