Howdy! My name is Sarah Pumphrey, and my time in Singapore has been full of many great experiences and lifetime memories! Coming to Singapore has been a dream of mine since my freshman year! But because of COVID and super strict travel restrictions these past few years, I never had the chance to visit. So, when the opportunity presented itself this year, I knew I had to act fast. Arriving in Asia was a full-circle moment for me, and as I reflect on my time in Singapore, I can’t help but take in and appreciate all the diverse cultures that make it so unique. From the different foods, stores, clothes, communities, and businesses, it’s truly something for everyone in Singapore. After just the first two days in the city, everything began to feel familiar, and navigating around became so much easier as I could really take it all in and appreciate the simplicity and efficiency of living life in Singapore vs. the US a little more. After being acclimated to the 14hr time difference and ways of public transportation, one of my favorite things to do now is take the scenic route around the city, as most of everything is within walking distance of our accommodations. So far, I’ve loved it all and have experienced such great foods at Hawker Centers, gone to gardens, museums, and malls, and even gotten to explore Arab street, Little India, Sentosa Island and so much more!! I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned to date is to wear bug spray and mosquito patches, not just one or the other, while in Singapore! From a young age, I’ve loved to travel and converse to learn about everyone, place, and thing, and what about it makes it so unique and different. As I grew to learn and experience the realities of other cultures, my appreciation grew exponentially, which is why I chose this program and opportunity to study abroad. As an aspiring global business leader, I believe in the educational benefits and global awareness gained from studying abroad. The affluence and Asian location of Singapore attracted me as I wanted to learn about its success in operating businesses. My time in Singapore to date has impacted me personally and as a transformational leader in the business world. I have learned so much about what makes Singapore a powerhouse, from engaging with locals to business leaders to vendors, and it has been amazing!
