Howdy! My name is Sahithi and I’m a senior marketing major at Mays. This trip to Singapore is my first (and last, unfortunately) study abroad trip prior to graduation, and so far, it’s been really fun. I initially picked Singapore because I’ve never traveled anywhere in Asia outside of India, and we have some family in Singapore as well.
Today marks one week of being here, and I would say that some of my expectations were correct and some were not. Before coming here, I expected humid weather, well-dressed and wealthy people, and a very clean city – all of which are true. However, I also expected a highly conservative city, especially when it came to fashion – which isn’t quite as true. I’ve noticed that people here, especially those similar to our age, dress about the same as we do in the US. I will say though, that people here also tend to dress much nicer all the time than I was used to. I rarely see people in loungewear or sweatpants walking around Singapore the way we do in the US.
So far, my favorite thing about Singapore is the food and the shopping! Both are plentiful, but I feel as though I’m getting more “bang for my buck”, both because of the exchange rate, but also because things seem to be a little more cheaper than they would be in the US. I’ve also liked all the cultural visits, and am excited for more next week!
