My first week in Barcelona has far surpassed all my expectations and hopes for my time here. It is unlike anywhere I’ve been before, and I truly love the valuable lessons it has taught me so far. When deciding to go on a study abroad trip, I knew I wanted to see the world, immerse myself in a new culture, and step outside my comfort zone, and that’s exactly what I’ve experienced so far!?I quickly assimilated with the culture here in Spain and have enjoyed the afternoon siestas and late dinners. The pace of life is slower and simpler, and I love witnessing how people cherish each other’s company. There are so many valuable lessons to learn from the simple life here in Barcelona.
Another aspect I appreciate about Barcelona is its rich history. In the first week, we got to know the city well through our scavenger hunt and hike up Montju?c Hill. The scavenger hunt allowed us to explore famous streets and landmarks while getting our bearings in the city. However, my favorite part was the hike up Montju?c Hill. Not only does it house the fascinating 17th-century Montju?c Castle, but it is also home to the Olympic facilities from the 1992 games and the renowned Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. The hill offered a breathtaking view of the city, port, and sea, and taught me so much about Barcelona’s origin, economy, and history.
Starting this trip with only knowing ‘Hola’ in Spanish, never having lived in a city, and being my first time in Europe, I had no idea what to expect. But I can genuinely say that there’s no other place I’d choose to spend my summer, and I’m already sad that my time here is limited. I can’t wait to share the rest of my experiences and bring the valuable lessons I learn back to America!
