My initial impressions of the study abroad program were similar and different in many ways. I thought that all of the people on the program would be staying in the same complex, however, we are spread throughout the city. Somethings throughout the city that I didn’t expect was how many different parts of Spain there is! So far we have been to farmers markets, the beach, the retro district, and many other parts I had no clue about. Something cool about Spain that is that they have tons of people who work for the city to keep it clean which is not like in the US. It is an amazing thing because they keep the city clean and running. As well, I didn’t expect that food places would be closed from 4-8pm so adjusting to eating a lot later was definitely hard at first, but I got used to it. Another difference I have seen is how in the US people are always on the go and in Spain everyone is in no rush. It is an interesting concept and I never thought I would enjoy it as much as I have! Being able to sit at a restaurant and not feel rushed is a great experience. At night, I usually tend to stick to taxi’s because crime rates are higher being in a big city, but it is like this in America as well. The language barrier has been easier as I learn more words everyday!! Thus far I have gained a better understanding of a different economy, traveled to beautiful sites, and had fun with new friends. I am hoping to continue learning a new language, trying new foods ( have already eaten Paella among other dishes), and just being able to explore Europe entirely. I have never been outside of the United States and this has been one of the best experiences I have had.
