When I first signed up to study abroad through Europe Innovation I was very nervous and hesitant, but studying abroad is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Going abroad has made me experience new cultures and experiences where I could not have done in the United States. Being able to learn about business from helping an underdeveloped country has made me look at the business environment in a totally different perspective. We worked hands on with Neum, Croatia to help out their environmental aspect of their little city. My group and I researched thoroughly and came up with several ideas and strategies to help Neum induct a more sustainable environment. We suggested putting up more trash cans around the city, installing solar panels, and including more farm to table restaurants. We presented these ideas to the city council of Neum and they have started establishing our ideas into their homeland. The individuals we also were working with were so kind and willing to listen to our input, which made our classes not feel like work.
I have definitely taken United States ?norms? for granted. Every restaurant we have gone to we have to pay for water, condiments and there was barely any air conditioning. My friends and I definitely had to adjust to this culture of Croatia, but overall we enjoyed our stay. I have also made several new friends in my study abroad group that I see myself being friends with when I return to College Station, TX in the fall. Studying abroad has provided me long lasting memories that I will tell my kids all about when I am older. I have no regrets going on this trip and would recommend it to anyone from all different backgrounds. I am excited to get back to the United States to be with my family but a piece of my heart will always be in Dubrovnik, Croatia!
