If you had told me five weeks ago that I would become an expert in international travel, I would never have believed you. Yet, when reflecting on my trip, I truly have learned more about the world in these past few weeks than I have in many years. Whether learning how to mend a whole transportation mess, understanding how to communicate and relate with others, or even realizing every store is closed on Sundays, I have discovered that living in a different culture is vital to a global perspective on life and business. After meeting people from Dresden, Munich, Berlin, France, Italy, and Switzerland, I can use the information gathered from their culture and use it to communicate better as a business professional. When I first arrived in Munich, Germany, I immediately noticed the almost cold tone with which they conduct themselves. At first, I labeled the German people as too unfriendly and quiet, then as the trip went on, I realized that they value a close family unit and efficiency. Just being with them for these weeks has transformed my perspective. In the business world, knowing that they value timeliness, efficiency, and family helps me to connect with and understand them. The most interesting part was seeing the vast difference between Munich and Berlin and their opinions of each other. The cultures are much different between these two countries, with Munich being the “Texas” and Berlin the “New York City” of Germany. It turns out those initial impressions were true! One of the biggest learning experiences was concerning the European Union, and how many people, although citizens within that member state, are not educated on the government organization in which they reside. Through all of this trip’s adventures, what a joy it has been to experience the beauty within Germany, whether through creation, culture, or citizens. Each of these areas was challenged by previous assumptions and initial reactions, replacing them with a newfound respect for the differences between us.
