Throughout the trip, My classmates and I had the opportunity to visit a vast number of companies and industries. We visited the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, a Hedge Fund, an S.E.A Aquarium (in Sentosa), Changi Airport, KPMG, etc. Conducting business in Singapore is very different from the U.S. The customer service is quite more engaging and employees are expected to go above and beyond for their guests. This is rooted in Asian culture?s mentality of being hospitable as mentioned in my pre-departure post. In addition, Singapore is a hub for international business, especially in Asia. When conducting business, you must be aware of the multitude of cultures present and every client?s unique background. This will help you understand individuals and engage with clients effectively.
All the industry visits exemplified the diversity of Singapore. Its history as a port has impacted both its diversity and dominance within the business sector. For instance, KPMG is an international accounting firm that has multiple locations across the world. Interestingly, the Singapore office takes a lot of pride in efficiency, sustainability, and effectiveness when implementing solutions to clients? company problems. KPMG explained how they had a company that struggled with the issue of counterfeit goods. So, they found an efficient and effective solution by using a device that could scan the items and make sure they were all the correct items. The consultants were very engaged with the client and made every effort in their power to solve their problem. In addition, their client base is made up of a multitude of Asian countries with a large number of ethnicities and cultures. It was very fulfilling to see how businesses in Singapore strived for the city-state’s sustainability initiatives, diversity, and exceptional customer service.
Overall, my time abroad has changed my perspective on Singapore and the world. Singapore is more than just a business hub, it houses millions of people and cultures from all over the world. Business in Singapore is beyond a money-making machine but exemplifies the cultural influence of many neighboring nations. It is not only about a rich, luxurious lifestyle but houses many people from every socioeconomic status. Studying abroad is an experience and perspective that can never be captured from a class or google search. Having interactions with native people allows you to see a country beyond the looking glass. The interactions with natives, stepping foot on the nature they pride themselves in maintaining, seeing a nation?s goal come to life, etc. are memories you won?t get to experience without going abroad.
All in all, the experience outweighed the anxiety and cost. If you have the chance to explore the world and visit a place you love, take advantage of your resources and pursue it.
