After two weeks of cultural experiences, company visits, and tons of fun, our group of 24 Aggies has returned to Texas. I am happy to say that this experience has not only positively impacted my perspective of Portuguese culture but has greatly improved my global mindset.
Throughout the trip, there was one important lesson that I learned. The future of business is based on sustainability. A common theme among almost every business that we visited was their dedication to an eco-friendly strategy and sustainability. Although not as common in the states, many businesses abroad are committed to extremely low-waste or completely waste-free manufacturing processes. For example, while visiting the textile manufacturer Impetus, we were shown that they not only use as much of their material as possible, but they are completely recycling any leftovers, eliminating waste. In addition, they also maintain an entire fleet of electric cars and pride themselves on a highly sustainable production process. Going forward, I will make it a priority to consider sustainability and implement it into all aspects of my future entrepreneurial endeavors.
Looking back on my original first impressions of Portuguese culture, I still agree with my observation that they are very collective. Again, while visiting Impetus, one of our group members pointed out a screen at the front of a line of workers, showing a percentage of productivity compared to their peers. Naturally, we assumed that it was some type of competitive motivator; however, our tour guide informed us that it was not for competitive purposes but to remind each of the employees that they are one large family, working together towards a larger purpose. This concept feels foreign to our individualistic culture, but I certainly appreciate and can see how it could be effectively implemented to create a better work environment.
Geared with a new perspective, I am excited to enter my final year as a Texas A&M student and can?t wait to apply these lessons and experiences to my future career.
Obrigada por ler!
