The first week in South Africa has been extremely fast-paced. This week has been both very enjoyable and very informative. I have been able to learn about the differences and similarities between the typical American city and Cape Town. I have found that from the outside Cape Town looks like a beautiful beach city that could be anywhere in the world. However, as you examine the city and the people further you will find many similarities and differences compared to the typical American coastal town. The most impactful difference is the lack of accessibility to common resources such as electricity and water. South Africa?s power grid is currently incapable of supporting the country, so the country has to live with ?load shedding.? Load shedding saves power by cutting power to certain areas of the country for around 2 hours at a time. This is a near-daily occurrence for every area and has not only disrupted businesses and citizens but has also forced some businesses to close. The country also suffers from water shortages. The worst was from 2016-2018. This has caused the country to implement many different water-saving strategies to help sustain the ever-decreasing water supply.
Although these issues may seem large, it is important to point out some of the similarities or overall positives that I have seen in the country. I have learned that the people here have the mindset of working together and helping their communities, rather than being self-focused. Many of the people here are very receptive to us as tourists and even those in tough circumstances seem to be happy with what they have. This has given me perspective when looking at American society where people seem more down on life for issues that are not nearly as important as what these people endure. The people here love their country and their roots, but government corruption seems to wreak havoc in their lives. However, through all of it, the people here still find ways to enjoy their lives, build businesses, and find success in their own minds. Over the next week or so, I hope to learn more about the people in South Africa and the business practices of the larger companies in the country and gain a new perspective on business and the world as a whole.
