Coming into the study abroad trip I did not know quite what to expect for the trip, I had never been out of the country much less to a different continent. From the photos, Cape Town looks like a town full of scenic views and ample opportunities to have the time of your life. As much as that is true there is so much more that goes into this City and the surrounding areas. The first couple of days were an absolute blast, we got to indulge in the tourism that makes Cape Town so unique. From the Castle of Good Hope to Table Mountain to Paragliding off the side of a cliff! However, looking around you can see that there are underlying issues that can be seen everywhere. I had never experienced a place that had so much to offer to other people yet had nothing to keep for themselves. We have come first to the locals the entire trip and it really puts things into perspective just how outgoing the people who live here are. After the first few days were complete, I experienced a culture shock when we entered the townships and saw how they struggle every single day just to put food on the table. Even through all these struggles, they welcomed us into their homes and businesses to share their knowledge and tell their stories. In the future when trying to compare Cape Town to other places I have known or been to the best I can say is it is like all the places I have been put together. The scenery reminds me of California or New Mexico, the city reminds me of Chicago or Boston, and the people remind me of back home and how we are so welcoming to everyone who is willing to respect our land and ideas.
